CBD Safe Discusses New Technology in the CBD Oil Market
Published 23 Aug 2018

Between the proven benefits of cannabidiol, or CBD, and the controversy over its regulatory status within the United States, the substance is attracting much interest in both the medical and dietary supplement industries. Back in 2015, Lexaria Corporation, a Canadian company, developed technology to increase CBD’s bioavailability by almost 500 percent. This only made people want it even more.

Earlier studies proved CBD safe, but it showed the bioavailability of CBD to be notably lower when ingested orally than when smoked. However, since Lexaria technology made it possible to increase its bioavailability, the market potential of CBD products simply skyrocketed. Back then, Chris Bunka, who is the chief executive officer of Lexaria, explained it this way:

“Increased absorption rates of CBD through Lexaria’s technology can lead to reduced overall dosage requirements, lowering costs to the consumer and reducing the burden on the liver and other internal organs. Simplistically, a bioavailability rate that is 500 percent theoretically means a consumer can ingest 80 percent less product and achieve the same expected outcome. This is a dramatic change in the way edibles could be formulated.”

These findings were the result of an experiment conducted in vitro on human intestinal tissue. The study, done by a third party, compared the absorption rates of Lexaria’s CBD-fortified ViPova TM black tea in the intestine with those of a concentration-matched CBD control preparation that did not have anything to do with Lexaria’s groundbreaking technology.

It revealed an average permeability of CBD to be 499 percent higher with Lexaria’s technology than it was in the control group. Researchers also compared baseline gastro-intestinal permeability with a second control combining CBD and normal black tea. It also showed an increase of gastro-intestinal absorption rates over the control formulation, this time by 325 percent.

“We are thrilled to have generated these positive laboratory results substantiating the effectiveness of our technology,” Bunka boasted at the time. “We believe that this only increases the likelihood of our patents being granted in due course, since it demonstrates how our technology improves absorption of CBD.” Not only did Lexaria win its patents, but it also changed how people make and consume CBD now.

How Lexaria Technology Changed the CBD Oil Industry

Today, the therapeutic and nutritional properties of CBD are now mainstream knowledge worldwide. Along with science proving CBD safe, it is the primary reason for the massive demand for CBD products, which is increasing on a daily basis. Behind the demand are companies doing their utmost to supply the purest, most absorbable CBD products on the market. The extraction process makes all the difference.

This is where Lexaria technology comes in. Acquiring the CBD compound is not as simple as selling hemp and marijuana to the masses. Cannabis contains two primary cannabinoids, namely CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. CBD’s health properties are what the world is clamoring for, but THC is the famous psychoactive compound loved by stoners everywhere. Separating the two is not easy.

Manufacturers are now using extraction technologies that ensure no traces of THC exist in their CBD oils, or that THC concentrations remain at recommended levels for those who want both. By extracting only CBD, companies are able to supply products that contain the medicinal benefits of cannabis, but without the “high” typically associated with it.

Purity, quality, and bio-availability are the main concerns of top distributors in the marketplace. Extracting only the purest CBD ensures consumers get potent products that contain all the compound’s benefits, and that they are able to absorb them easily. Just how do they do that? These are the most effective methods of extracting CBD for quality, purity, and permeability:

·         Thermal Extraction

While most companies focus on developing CBD oils for humans to consume, some are making CBD products to benefit animals too. Therefore, manufacturers started focusing on an extraction process that uses water vapor, called thermal extraction. It involves using heated air and resulting condensation to vaporize THC and extract the remaining cannabidiol. This method removes all trace of THC.

·         Bio-ethanol Extraction

Experts consider bioethanol extraction as better than organic, since it has the lowest carbon footprint. This method is an effective and sustainable way of extracting CBD. It relies on producing bioethanol from food waste and other bio-products, and using that as a base alcohol for extracting CBD. The result is a pure CBD of extremely high quality, and easily absorbed by those who ingest it.

·         Super-critical CO2 Extraction

Super-critical CO2 extraction is unquestionably the most common, most bioavailable, and purest method of extracting high quality CBD compounds. It is gentler than other extraction methods, since it retains naturally occurring, very beneficial molecules in hemp plants. The result is a full spectrum CBD product rich in terpenes, flavonoids, and other valuable compounds.

Final Thoughts

The breakthrough technology introduced by Lexaria has changed the face of the CBD industry. Manufacturers are now using effective extraction methods that ensure CBD safe, as well as more permeable than ever before. These processes are efficient, sustainable, high quality, and time-tested. However, as the CBD industry expands evermore, technology will only develop further.
