With marijuana now legal in a growing number of states, both for medical and recreational purposes, scientists and manufacturers are tailoring products specifically to the aging demographic. One of these, available in different forms, is cannabidiol, or CBD. This non-psychoactive cannabinoid is absorbable in various ways, and it provides all the benefits of CBD for elders, just without the mental and physical “high.”
For the elderly, CBD offers a horde of especially welcoming benefits. Many have no idea of the many ways CBD can boost their quality of life, and there are choices in how to take it. You do not have to smoke it, unless you want to, of course, but you can buy CBD oil online, even natural edible oil in foods, tinctures, topicals, soft gels, water, and much, much more.
For many senior citizens, prescription drugs are a nightmare. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, in many cases, CBD and other cannabis derivatives can curb use of these addictive, dangerous medications, and in some cases, even replace them entirely. There are many reasons to consider CBD in your twilight years, all proven by science, such as treating these common, oft debilitating issues:
CBD is a potent analgesic. Specifically, CBD has painkilling properties, along with other cannabinoids too. Scientists show it working just as well as, in some cases even better, than popular prescription opioids. Studies prove it effective at treating neuropathic pain, arthritis, and other types of severe discomfort. What is more, it treats inflammation, the underlying trigger of most pain.
Bones weaken as age sets in. Cannabis provides an excellent alternative for strengthening the skeletal system. Several studies show CBD with bone-healing properties, able to aid in fixing fractures and supporting bone health. Furthermore, those suffering multiple sclerosis can also benefit from its powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Although the relaxing effects of cannabis, CBD specifically, are famous already, its antioxidant properties promote feelings of energy, ideal for combating fatigue and inertia. CBD strengthens cells and aids in complete regeneration, and as an antioxidant, it fights free radicals, returning a sense of vigilance to the person. CBD is even more powerful that famous antioxidants Vitamin C and Vitamin E.
Plenty evidence shows cannabis treating glaucoma effectively. This neurodegenerative condition causes intraocular pressure that affects eyesight and impairs vision dramatically. CBD relieves this pressure, by as much as 25 percent, which helps you to both feel and see well. Furthermore, cannabinoids improve neural communication throughout the brain and body, which also helps to relieve glaucoma symptoms.
Healthy sleep gets difficult as we age, especially sustaining deep sleep. The brain regenerates during deep sleep, freeing itself from toxic substances produced by the body. Quality sleep is important for preventing age-related neurodegenerative issues, such as glaucoma and Alzheimer’s disease, but addictive sleeping pills have harmful side effects. CBD is safe and effective at treating sleep issues.
Loss of appetite is common in old age, and it has devastating consequences. It weakens tissues, causes mental problems, and is responsible for the kind of weight loss that just wastes away. Everybody who has ever tried cannabis knows about the “munchies,” a ravenous side effect of consumption. However, it is mainly CBD which triggers a hungry feeling so effective at fixing age-related appetite problems.
Studies are underway investigating the effect of cannabis on Alzheimer’s disease and other degenerative diseases so prevalent among seniors, particularly its ability to prevent such from the outset, slow progression, and even reverse some damage. CBD inhibits production of the toxic protein responsible for causing these diseases, since it stops the inflammatory triggers and regenerates damaged cells.
While the benefits of a natural edible oil rich in CBD are abundant and well established, it is always wise to discuss CBD treatment with your doctor beforehand. He or she can help you determine the right dosages, as well as mitigate any potential interactions with existing medication. CBD can influence efficacy of some drugs, making them either more potent or less.
The number of seniors using prescription drugs daily is alarming and growing constantly, unnecessarily, year by year. Big Pharma lobbies government to create a monopoly of its products, but scientists and doctors all agree that many of these medications are harmful, and that other, safer, alternatives exist for treatment. CBD is one of them, and if evidence dictates, it is the most medicinally valuable of all.
CBD is safe. It is not addictive. It has no side effects, least of all harmful, potentially fatal ones. CBD is non-psychoactive, so cannot even make you “high.” In fact, doctors are now using CBD to treat addiction itself, primarily addiction to prescription drugs, such as opioids like fentanyl, and are finding huge success with this approach. For seniors, CBD can prove especially helpful. Certainly worth trying.
